The Moscow Metro is internationally renowned not only for its efficiency, but for its exceptional architectural and artistic heritage. Conceived during the Soviet era as “underground palaces for the people,” its stations feature an extraordinary combination of decorative stonework, monumental bronze sculpture, grand chandeliers, and intricate mosaics and frescoes—many of which are protected as architectural landmarks.

This privately guided experience explores six to seven of the most distinguished stations, each reflecting a different period, artistic style, and historical narrative. The tour offers a concise yet insightful perspective on Soviet-era design, symbolism, and urban ambition.

With a duration of approximately 45-60 minutes, the experience is ideally incorporated as a seamless interlude between central locations, whether as part of a broader sightseeing programme or between museum visits.

The Moscow Metro Tour may be included on a complimentary basis when combined with a privately guided walking or panoramic city tour.

Detailed Tour Description
The first line of the Moscow Metro opened in 1935 as one of the Soviet Union’s most ambitious urban projects—designed not only as a transport system, but as a monumental public space, a vehicle of state symbolism, and a network of deep-level shelters.

Today, the metro has expanded to over 240 stations across 15 lines and more than 300 kilometres of track. What distinguishes it is the individuality of each station: from restrained compositions to highly elaborate interiors, no two are alike.

The Moscow Metro is exceptionally clean, well-organised, and considered very safe, with clear signage and a constant staff presence, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors.

This privately guided experience focuses on the most opulent and richly decorated stations of the Soviet era. For those interested in contemporary design, a separate tour of modern Moscow Metro stations may be arranged.
