This tour explores Moscow's most iconic landmarks while placing them in their historical, architectural and cultural context. From Imperial Russia and the Romanov dynasty to the Soviet era and contemporary Moscow, the route provides a comprehensive introduction to the city's rich heritage.
Alexander Garden & Manezhnaya Square
Our walk begins in Manezhnaya Square and the adjacent Alexander Garden, one of Moscow's oldest public parks, created after the Napoleonic Wars.
Highlights include:
Four Seasons Fountain – the centrepiece of Manezhnaya Square.
The Manege – an architectural masterpiece completed in 1817 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon. We discuss its remarkable engineering, architectural design and changing functions during the Imperial, Soviet and modern periods.
The Ruins Grotto (Italian Grotto) – constructed using fragments of buildings destroyed during the Fire of Moscow in 1812, symbolising the city's rebirth after Napoleon's invasion.
The Romanov Obelisk – originally unveiled in 1914 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The monument was later altered during the Soviet period, providing an interesting example of how political ideology reshaped public monuments.
Monument to Patriarch Hermogenes – dedicated to the Patriarch whose resistance inspired the liberation of Moscow during the Time of Troubles. Here we discuss the Polish occupation of Moscow and the events leading to the victory of the volunteer army in 1612.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Eternal Flame and Hero Cities Memorial Alley – Russia's principal memorial to the Second World War (known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War). An honour guard is stationed beside the Eternal Flame, and the ceremonial Changing of the Guard takes place every hour between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. Whenever possible, we time our visit to witness the ceremony.

GUM Department Store
Built in 1893 as the Upper Trading Rows, GUM is one of Europe's most beautiful historic shopping arcades and today enjoys protected architectural status.
