Detailed Tour Description
The Kremlin Armoury tour takes you through one of Russia’s foremost museums, the State Armoury Museum. Comparable in significance to the Tower of London or Dresden’s Green Vault, the Armoury displays the treasures of Russian royalty. The name can be somewhat misleading: historically referring to the treasury of the Russian tsars, the Armoury houses far more than arms and armour, including carriages, court garments, crowns, gold and silver plate, and ceremonial objects. The present building, completed in 1851 as part of the Grand Kremlin Palace complex, features grand, high-ceilinged halls and richly decorated interiors befitting its collection.

After meeting your guide at a location of your choice, you will proceed to the Trunity Gate or Borovitsky Tower and enter the Kremlin through the Borovitsky Gate. Once on the Kremlin grounds, you will enter the Armoury and, after checking in your coat, begin your visit. The exhibition is arranged over two floors, connected by the museum’s grand staircase.
During the Armoury tour, your guide will take you around the following collections:

  • Coronation dresses of the Russian tsarinas – ceremonial gowns worn for coronations, richly decorated with embroidery and precious materials
  • Vestments of the higher clergy – garments embroidered in gold and adorned with thousands of freshwater pearls
  • Thrones of the Russian tsars – historic seats of power used in official ceremonies
  • Diamond-studded crowns and royal regalia – symbols of imperial authority and coronation tradition
  • Gilded carriages of the Russian royalty – ornate state vehicles used in processions and court ceremonies
  • Horse trappings and harness – ceremonial sets crafted from precious materials for royal use
  • Gold icon frames, chalices, and illuminated altar Gospels – religious objects decorated with sapphires, rubies, and emeralds
  • Gold and silver plate from the tsars’ banquet tables – richly crafted serving pieces used during formal court banquets and state occasions
  • Arms and armour associated with the Russian tsars – both ceremonial and functional pieces reflecting different periods
  • Ambassadorial gifts – lavish diplomatic offerings ranging from large gilded silver platters and goblets to complete dinner services
  • Fabergé eggs – intricately crafted, bejewelled Easter gifts commissioned by Emperor Nicholas II for the Empress and Dowager Empress
